Song lyrics

On Misty Shores

I wandered far on empty shores of misty lakes alone
Grey waters touch my straying feet, their murmuring voices moan.
Old trees in misty garments groan, a wind their boughs does shake
And twilight fills the dreary dales beside the silent lakes.

The restless spirits kindle lights that gleam upon the moors
On empty graves awaiting those who wander on these shores.

The wind sighs faintly in the boughs, speaks to the willow grey,
'A maid once roamed these misty shores, and strayed, and passed away.
Black stones rise tall out of the veil her restless spirit wove,
That wailing haunts the dusky dales and sighs in empty groves.'

The voices whisper in my ears, the rising waters call,
A shimmering shroud is woven from the misty veils of fall.
The restless spirits kindle lights that gleam upon the moors
On empty graves awaiting those who wander on these shores.

I´ve wandered far on empty shores, I lift my tear-washed face
The waters wait with longing arms my soul for to embrace.
Faint shapes of long forgotten ghosts weep under leafless elms
And mourn her that so young should pass into their gloomy realm.

The waters call, I must obey, I´m drawn towards the lake,
'A maid once roamed these misty shores' - I close my eyes and wait.
The restless spirits kindle lights that gleam upon the moors
On empty graves awaiting those who wander on these shores.

The Sprig Within Her Hair

On naked feet she danced and sang
The shepherd´s little daughter
As she drove her gheese to have a drink
Down by the elfin water.
´Twas said a fairy people lived
Where she used to sit all alone
She laid a wreath of flowers there
When nightfall sent her running home.

One morning, though, there stood an elf
Her wreath of flowers in his hand
'Your kindness, girl, shall find reward.'
'O show me then your wonderous land.'
'I fear no good of this will come -
Pray, don´t forget your own land fair.'
And from a holly tree he broke
A sprig and put it in her hair.

They went deep into the lake
Under water lilies fair
Somewhere far below the waves
Oh, but he will take her there.
So deep down into the lake
Nothing will remind her there
Of the world she left behind
But for the sprig within her hair.

He took her hand and down they went
She saw what none before had seen
A city made of shining gold
The crystal mirror of their Queen.
But as she saw her mirrored self
The sprig of holly in her hair
She pleaded, 'Take me back, good elf,
Again I wish to breathe the air.'

But they were deep down in the lake
Under water lilies fair
Somewhere far below the waves
He had taken her there.
So deep down into the lake
Nothing could remind her there
Of the world she left behind
But for the sprig within her hair.

When she returned her flock was gone,
A hundred winters since had passed.
Deserted lay the land she loved
And full of grief she cried at last.

They live deep down in the lake
Under water lilies fair
Somewhere far below the waves
Let them never take you there
So deep down into the lake
Fairies dwell there, old and fair
In a world so unlike ours,
Let them never take you there!

The lyrics of this song are written in Quenya, a language invented by J.R.R. Tolkien. In English, the lyric may be rendered as follows:

'O see the most slender maiden in the night/ o watch her dance, most beautiful for us/ into the forest I follow her feet on a path/ o beautiful daughter of the wood, my song is for you.
'O dance for me between the flowers on the grass/ your head is crowned by white lilies/ your eyes shine like stars in the dark/ o dance under the stars, young child.
'O sing your song, most lovely maiden/ your voice is sweet like flowing water/ like singing birds in the old forest/ like fine rain on trees, most beautiful one.
'O see the new dawn in the east/ the birds are singing, do you hear them?/ they summon you, in your house you shall dwell/ o, until the evening, I will guard you.'

A Perfect Place

Fly me away - to a place I like to find
Hear what you say - but all those feelings in my mind
I tried to leave so far away behind
Won´t you stay - finally
Why can´t you say what you feel?
And I´m again in pain

You´re out of line - did you never feel the water rise?
You never stopped and realized
Still have no time - and I´m sinking deeper in this river,
I can´t escape this endless shiver
Why won´t you stay - drown with me
Stay here today - can´t you say why you´re in pain,
Please flush away the rain

She stood so far away from everything
Alone and feeling lost - awaiting the first frost
Into a forest where a scream was born
(A place she liked to find) - to leave her world behind
She sat down by the river to watch it flow
She began to cry - there´s nowhere left to hide
And when the night darkened her filthy face
It took away her fears - and swallowed up her tears

She never liked to show her feelings or faith to anyone
To get along with what she´d done
She never told me what she felt - but when I saw her cry
She kissed the world goodbye

The Road Goes Ever On

Music: Jan-Peer Hartmann
Lyrics: J.R.R. Tolkien
Lead voices: Jan, Paul, Nils, Falk

Way To The Sun

A crack in the clouds
Opens wide without sound
It stands open
Like a gate towards the late evening sun

A road made of light
Leading out of the night
Lies before us
Over oceans deep it leads to the sun

All land around
In deep shadows is drowned
Under night's cloak
A land full of light
Far beyond endless night
Lies ahead

The evening sky
Now gets darker, yet I
Still do linger
Though the gate now starts to fade - day is gone

The world lies behind
You say, 'Make up your mind
Let us go now.'
And upon this sunlit path we move on

You take my hand
And we're leaving this land
Filled with shadows
The last ray of light
Leads us out of the night
To the sun
On our way to the sun
