Since their formation in the mid-1990s, the Fauns have been constantly refining their musical style, accumulating musical approaches as different as folk, rock and metal, with song structures often reminiscent of the seventies' progressive rock bands. Instruments such as twelve-string guitar, lute, recorder and flute add to the original approach in their music.

After more than sixty live gigs and several demo recordings, the band's first album LeafFall was released in November 2007, followed by a period of restructuring. Some eighteen months later, the Fauns are now returning with a new line-up and a new set of songs. Besides the founding members Jan, Nils and Falk Hartmann (guitar, drums, bass), the band now includes Kirsten Middeke (viola, flute) and Jan Hecker-Stampehl (keyboards).
